Return to Normal?
It will be interesting to see the results of this social experiment in a few years. There is a very different agenda operating on behalf of the two political ideologies. On the left there is the urge to generalize and 'protect'. Harsh rules are imposed in an almost random manner and the perception is that it is the job of the federal government to micro-manage every aspect of life from child care to social distancing. On the right there is the perception that people should take responsibility for their own choices. The desire to 'do it myself' is strong. I predict that most people will see their own self interest in rejecting the harsher measures of the 'nanny states'. The sorting will continue with people moving away from states where the government continues to impose punishment on behaviors that seem defiant of the sanctions put in place. But I believe that there will be hold overs of behaviors that foster social distancing. Once I had experienced the convenience of ordering in groceries and other items shopping on the open market appealed to me far less. Some items are best shopped for in person, but I would happily abandon in-store shopping if the items I wanted were available for pick-up or delivery.
